What are backlinks?

Backlinks (also called inbound links or IBL) are hyperlinks from one website to another. When website A links to website B, that link is a backlink to website B. Backlinks are one of the most important ranking factors in Google's algorithm because they signal that other websites vouch for your content.

The principle behind backlinks: A link from another site is a vote of confidence in your content. Search engines treat these votes as evidence of authority, and authority is one of the primary signals that determines whether your content surfaces above a competitor's when both pages cover the same topic.

Backlink Type SEO Value How to Earn
Editorial (unpaid) Highest: natural citation of useful content Original research, data, definitive guides
Guest post (relevant) Medium: if topically relevant, not spammy Pitch quality content to relevant publications
Directory/citation Low: mostly for local SEO Industry directories, Google Business Profile
Broken link replacement Medium: replaces existing link equity Find broken links, offer your content as replacement
Paid link (violates guidelines) Negative if discovered: manual penalty risk Not recommended

Think of backlinks as votes of confidence. When a reputable website links to your site, it's essentially saying: "This content is valuable and trustworthy." The more votes (backlinks) you have from high-authority sources, the more Google trusts your site.

What do backlinks do?

Brand Promotion

Backlinks create passive brand exposure across relevant web pages and communities. A link from an industry publication, complementary business, or authority site introduces your brand to new audiences without active promotion from your side.

Authority Boost

High-quality backlinks signal credibility to search engines. They improve your domain authority and page authority, which are key factors in rankings. A single link from a highly authoritative site (like a major news publication or industry leader) can significantly impact your rankings.

Social Media Synergy

Backlinks work alongside social media marketing to amplify brand awareness. Quality content that attracts backlinks is the same content that gets shared across social platforms. The combination creates a multiplier effect for visibility.

Why backlink quality matters

Modern SEO emphasizes relevant, high-authority backlinks over volume. You will have difficulty trying to rank for competitive keywords without quality backlinks. "You are going to have a difficult time trying, particularly if you are hoping to rank for a competitive keyword" without strategic backlink building.

Two quality determinants matter most:

Authority

Links from respected websites in your niche carry exponentially more weight than links from new or low-authority sites. A link from the New York Times, for example, carries more weight than 100 links from unknown blogs.

Relevance

Links should come from contextually related sources. A kitten rescue site benefits more from links from other rescue organizations and animal welfare sites than from unrelated cat content pages. Topical relevance matters because it signals genuine endorsement rather than random linking.

Building a Backlink Strategy

Effective backlink strategies focus on earning links through valuable content and strategic outreach:

  • Create shareable content: Develop resources (guides, original research, tools) that other sites naturally want to link to
  • Reach out to influencers: Contact industry leaders, journalists, and complementary businesses who might link to your content
  • Publish guest content: Write articles for authoritative sites in your industry with a link back to your site
  • Get listed in directories: Industry directories and review sites provide relevant backlinks
  • Build relationships: Develop ongoing relationships with publishers and sites in your niche

Avoid buying links or using link schemes. Google penalizes these tactics with ranking drops and deindexing. Focus on earning links naturally through superior content quality.
