When someone asks an AI engine about your category, the model does not hand back a list of links. It synthesizes an answer, and in doing so it makes choices: which brands to include, how to describe them, and which to recommend. GEO is the work of making sure the representation it synthesizes about you is accurate, favorable, and present, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot.
GEO sits at the top of a three-layer stack. It depends on the layers beneath it: an engine cannot represent a brand it never cited, and it cannot cite a page it could not crawl and trust.
